Wednesday January 2, 2013: Happy New Year!

First: I wish you all a happy New Year and hope it will be a fantastic year for you.

The last days of 2012 were very relaxing for us. Last Friday we had our friends over for our first evening to end the year together. We had lots of fun and it was a great success.

We spend New Year’s Eve at home as we have been doing the last couple of years. Especially I don’t care about New Year’s Eve and I don’t want to go anywhere that night. I’m always in anticipation for the new year to start. New Year’s Day we did the traditional visits to both our Moms. R. had to go back to work today but I had another day of vacation. For me normal life starts again tomorrow.

2013

It’s time to reveal my plans: a new year has started and this year is special to me. In May I’m hoping to reach the age of 45 and in March it’s 20 years ago R. and I met. Because it’s a special year to me, I started thinking about what I want to accomplish this year a couple of weeks ago. I thought and thought about it over and over again till I was convinced I can do this and I want to do this.

I have 2 big goals this year:

1. Reach my goal weight
2. Run a half marathon

Goal weight:

For years and years I’ve been struggling with my weight. I lose some, I gain some which kept me at the same weight for a couple of years (except last year where I gained weight). Nothing wrong with that, except that it isn’t a healthy weight. I have thought about how I was going to reach it and after lots of thinking and testing I have decided to go back to Weight Watchers. WW has been the only program in the past that has really worked for me and helped me reach my goal weight 13 years ago. Since then I’ve been struggling with my highest weight 10 years ago in 2003. A decade!

This time I’m not going to give up, I won’t stop till I reached a weight that’s healthy for me and that I can be happy with. I don’t have a specific date in mind but December 31 will be great (if not I keep on going in 2014). I have to lose 9 kg (19.8 lbs).

Half marathon

After two attempts at running a half, I still can’t get it out of my head. Not finishing has been one of the biggest failures to me and I can’t stand that, neither can I let it go. So I’m trying again this year. I have a race in mind in October and I have made a training schedule that will prepare me for that.

But, one of my biggest “problems” is race day nerves. I have messed up a few races because I was nervous.  I have planned a few races the next months to see how it goes, if I’m still that nervous I might not run that half in a race but on my own.

I don’t care if I run it in a race or on my own or that I run in October or maybe even on December 31: I shall run this distance in 2013!

I don’t have to prove to myself that I can run a half in a race but I have to prove to myself that I can run  it. That’s what matters most to me.

Workouts:

What better way to start a new year and my plans for 2013 with a run on the first day of the year. When I got up it was raining cats and dogs but I had my mind set on a run and after about 30 minutes I went. It wasn’t that bad at all although I had to take more walk breaks towards the end of run (probably because of the wine on New Year’s Eve). Because it was early there was hardly any traffic and no one outside for a walk or run except for this one girl that I saw. Just like me she was running: girl power!

Stats:
Run-walk ratio: 7-7-14, 2 minutes walking inbetween (28 minutes running, 6 minutes walking)
Weather: rain, bit windy, 5C (41 degrees)
Distance: 4.8 K / 3 miles
Time: 00:33:46
Last song on Ipod before finish: Spandau Ballet – Lifeline.

Meals:

Now that I have started Weight Watchers I will make pics of my meals for as far as that’s possible (not going to take photos when I have a work lunch for example).

Wednesday:

Breakfast (7 points): 2 slices of bread with cheese and marmalade and an orange.

Lunch (8 points): 2 slices of bread with egg/tomato/cottage cheese.

 

Dinner (7 points): Pork meat, potatoes, green beans.

  1. Love that you ushered out the old year with good friends – looks like a very warm and wonderful evening.

    Your goals for the new year sound great! I am right with you on those race day nerves; I plan on doing a bunch of shorter races this spring (well, except for one half) and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to work through them…otherwise, I don’t know – maybe a couple of sessions with a sports therapist? If you figure it out, PLEASE SHARE!

    Oh, and regarding you doing a half, it sounds like running the distance, and not especially the race, is the important thing to you, so hey, if you end up doing 13.1 miles on your own to avoid race-day nerves, more power to you!

  2. Hey – I wanted to let you know that I have been reading, just not commenting. You can reach your goals this year and I think you are smart to move the half to October a cooler month for you right? Good luck this year and I can’t wait to read all about it.

  3. I think you should schedule your own Fran Half Marathon and make a T-shirt for yourself. Who needs to sign up for a race when you can create your own and do it when *you* are ready!

  4. Those are great goals!!! I love the idea of still running the half marathon even if it isn’t at a race. I get nervous very easily so running in a race has never crossed my mind but I am loving your idea!!! Sounds like 2013 is going to be a great year for you!

  5. I should be doing Weight Watchers. Do you do it on line or go to meetings or just do it? I have gained a fair amount of weight back.

    • Andrea I do it online, the past couple of years their website is improved so much compared to what it was and they have apps for my phone and Ipad so I can track everything immediately. And, which is a bonus for me, they have great recipes.

  6. I think those are great goals, and I agree that it doesn’t matter if you participate in an organized half or do it on your own – knowing you can do it is the main thing! I’ll be cheering you on this year!

  7. Good luck for all your goals for 2013…….you know I will be supporting you all the way.
    While doing WW…watch aspartame foods and sugar……otherwise its a good system ( I lost my weight this way but cause I ate diet foods I got ill – you know the story…my fault not the program )

    • Marcelle I stopped using aspartame foods over a year ago and have no intention using it again so yes I’m watching those foods. I don’t eat much sugar either so no big problem there either.

      I have to admit I haven’t used the Ipad that much. I’m using it for reading blogs at the moment and sometimes for the Weight Watchers app but besides that I still have to figure everything out.

    Looks like you had a really lovely time with your friends.

    Running 13.1 miles is running a Half-Marathon, whether you do it through an organized race or just go out and run it by yourself. The advantage to the race of course would be the prepared hydration and fueling stops. But if it’s nerves and pressure that keeps you from meeting this goal, by all means do your own thing!

  9. My daughter loves her iPad, she even as a Kindle app so she can “rent” her school books online – way cheaper and a lot easier than carrying around a bunch of books back and forth on the train to school!

  10. Happy New year Fran! Looks like you had a great holiday.
    I love your goals I think they are all doable for you and good for you for doing what works for you and on your terms…those are the things that make us successful.
    I have no doubt you will run a 1/2 this year…heck you’ve already run hundreds of them if you add up all your miles..food for thought ..you are gonna rock it either it being registered or not, let the pressure go and have fun!

  12. Happy New Year, Fran! I like your goals and believe this will be your year!
    I am currently working on losing some weight too. I haven’t posted about it but it’s been on my mind the past few months. I started getting too lazy so this year I’m focusing on more exercise, more cooking and packing lunches, and less alcohol. I’m already off to a good start but it’s only Jan. 4th.

  13. Starting a new year with a run is really nice, although the wine of the New Year’s Eve :)
    That’s why I had ran on December 31st from 04:00 to 04:45 pm … before the dinner :) During the last day of the year I ran alone in the middle of the street, in the middle of the afternoon, but I enjoyed that last run of 2012. We spent New Year’s Eve with friends: 20 people! Fortunately some friend of us have a huge living room in their house.
