Friday January 3, 2014: Happy 2014!

Posted on

We stayed at home New Years Eve like we have been doing for the past 3 years. We always went to friends but that always resulted in staying up way too late and have a hangover the next day. Besides that Bella isn´t really afraid of fireworks but she´s restless all day and evening and we rather stay home. It turns out we love it. I always have fingerfood on the table the whole evening, we put on the fire and just have a relaxing night at home. We both don´t really care about this evening and don´t really need to celebrate.

Happy New Year to all of you. Are you all glad that the new year has started and life is back to normal? It’s not totally normal for me because this is my last vacation day. Normal regular life starts on Monday and I can’t say I’m sad about that. I saw some of you have lots of snow now. I’m lucky, we hare having a very mild winter so far and there’s no sign right now that it’s going to get cold or that we get snow. For me it can stay this way all winter.

This is a long post because I have to catch up on the Photo a day challenge that I didn’t post on my Tuesday post. But no worries: lots of pics today :)

Beebox content week 1:

Apple-strawberry juice, apples, pears, eggs, beef, bacon, rocket salad, parsnip, pumpkin, mushrooms, pak choi cabbage, onions, celeriac.

Workouts:

Tuesday: Running

What else to close the year than to go for a run. I want to run on the last year of 2013 to close the worst year in running I had since I started in 2009. It wasn’t pretty but I did it. I kept scrolling through my Ipod for motivational songs like “The final countdown” (since it was the last day of the year), “The logical song” (running is logic, just put one foot in front of the other) (Supertramp), “No Surrender” (Bruce) at the part that was the most difficult, “The Edge of Glory” by Gaga and I finished with “Glory Days” by Bruce, hopeful for glory running days to come in 2014.

Stats:
Distance: 5 K / 3.1 miles
Time: 00:36:44
Running: 8-8-8-8 minutes.
Weather: dry, not too much wind, 5C (11 degrees)
Last song on Ipod before finish: Bruce Spingsteen – Glory Days

Wednesday: Running

Where I closed the year with a run, I started the new year with a run too. I didn’t watch my pace because my running intervals are getting longer now. Finishing the intervals is more important than the speed. I completed this run too which was a bit easier than the one on Tuesday.

Stats:
Distance: 5 K / 3.1 miles
Time: 00:37:01
Running: 10-10-12 minutes.
Weather: dry, not too much wind, 5C (11 degrees)
Last song on Ipod before finish: The Doobie Brothers – What a fool believes

Photo a day challenge:

December 24: Wrapped
The historic boats called “botter” in my village are wrapped for Winter.

December 25: Best bit of your day
Spending Christmas with R., my Mom and Bella.

December 26: Where you slept
In my own bed at home.

December 27: What you’re doing now
Grocery shopping.

December 28: Something awesome.
I find trees awesome, especially the majestic ones.

December 29: Reflect, best bit of 2013.
There are many highlights in 2013, it was a good year. But for me the best bit is that I started doing long (organized) walks with my dog. We do 10K (6 miles) on these walks. It’s my best bit because I found out I love doing these long walks, so does Bella, and I see so many beautiful parts of my country.

December 30: You.

December 31: Celebrate.
Since I started running back in 2009 this has been my worst running year. Today I celebrated that, even though it was such a bad running year, I never gave up and I did that with a run. I look forward to a better running year in 2014.

January 1: Lunch.
This was on the table at my Mom’s house during lunch time. Typical Dutch treat on New Year: “oliebollen and appelflappen”. I didn’t have any however, haven’t had lunch at all today.

January 2: Begins with G.
Greylag Goose.

365 Days In Nature:

December 27: The weather was crap! Not a dry moment all day, couldn’t find anything interesting to photograph this day.

December 28: Winterwandeling Zeist.

December 29: Another photo from the walk in Zeist on Saturday.

December 30: Met the swan family again.

December 31: Beautiful sunrise on my last run of the year.

January 1: The sky during my first run of 2014.

January 2: It was raining and all of the sudden it stopped, the sun came out and off Bella (my dog) and I were for a walk.

Meals:

Thursday January 2

Sauerkraut with mashed potatoes and sausage.

  1. We usually do just what you did for New Year’s Eve. This year we went out but it wasn’t great so we need a do over on that.

As I sat at work yesterday having my usual salad for lunch I kept thinking how good it felt to be rotating back to a more regular routine. It’s ironic that when the holidays start, it’s fun to have a difference in what you usually do and then by the end, you just can’t wait to get back to normal!

  2. Lots and lots of nice photos. Thanks. You are right that running is all about enjoying it. For me racing is truly what makes me enjoy it. I am slowing down but I still enjoy racing. Although the other day when it was so cold as I raced I did question my sanity a bit.
I am inspired by trees too.

  3. I love that your mom is wearing those tight and shoes! :D

I can’t believe you didn’t eat those applepoppin thingies. I would probably have eaten all 4.

Thanks for showing the picture of your grocery store. I love seeing every day things from other countries. There was a blog I used to read where someone was in Russia and the grocery store aisle had sausages all on one side and vodka on the other LOL!

  4. Happy New Year! It sounds like you and R. have hit on the perfect way to usher in the new year, and I love how Bella is right there, snoozing with you guys!

Your grocery store is so interesting! Every thing is stacked so nicely and symmetrical – now I want to take a step back and look at MY grocery store to see if it’s similar…I don’t think so, but you know, I don’t really SEE it anymore.

Love that picture of you – it just radiates happiness. :)
