Tuesday November 19, 2013: Health update

Posted on

Update: been to the doctor Wednesday morning. All the tests came back negative which is positive because I’m healthy.

But that doesn’t solve my problems. She saw no medical reason for me to go to the hospital for further examination. Based on my issues she suggested I start eating gluten free for 3 months and see what happens. After 3 months and no change, she would give me a referral for examination in the hospital.

Of course, stupid and flabbergasted as I was because they found nothing, I said okay. But I’m not okay with it. I’ve read a lot about gluten intolerance the past 2 weeks and the reason I’m not okay is:

a) gluten intolerance can’t always be shown from blood tests, especially when you’re an adult. The only safe way to diagnose this, is an gastroscopy in the hospital where they pick bites from your bowels.

b) if you eat gluten free and go to the hospital for the above mentions examination after 3 months, it can’t be shown anymore because you don’t eat glutes anymore.

c) people who have this and have to eat gluten free for the rest of their live, say that it’s hard to eat gluten free all the time and you shouldn’t do it without an official diagnose.

So I called back the same day that I wanted to talk to my doctor again and that I wanted a referral letter for an examination in the hospital. Of course she was busy and I had to wait till Friday afternoon when she called me back about it.

I have read on the internet that when your blood test comes back negative, it’s usually hard to get a referral for the hospital. So I wrote down everything I wanted to say to get that note. But when she called back on Friday she immediately agreed to write me that note. I could notice in her voice she thought it isn’t necessary but I want to be sure.

Yesterday after work I got the referral letter and today I called the hospital. I have an appointment with the specialist on December 17th. That’s 4 weeks from now but I have these problems for so long now, I can wait a little bit longer.

I’m sorry if some of my explanation isn’t clear, English is not my native language and medical terms in English are particularly hard for me. But I hope you understand what I wrote above.

Beebox content week 46:

Dried white beans, apple juice, corn bread, grapes, pears, radish, salad, carrots, onion, kale, red cabbage, potatoes.

Workouts:

Monday: Yogalates

Lower body workout. 30 minutes.

Tuesday: Rest

This wasn’t supposed to be a rest day but yesterday when I was walking Bella suddenly the top of my left foot started to hurt. At first I could barely move it but after a few minutes I could walk again and shortened our walk. This morning when I got up to get ready for my morning run, again I could barely stand on it and went back to bed. In the morning it was bothering me a bit but at the moment it’s fine again. I’ll try to run again tomorrow.

Meals:

Sunday November 10

Pork tenderloin with pepper sauce, potatoes with herbs and olive oil out of the oven, pears.

For dessert I made chocolate pots by Nigella. Simple but delicious, all you add is chocolate, cream, an egg, piment and vanilla.

Monday November 11

Red cabbage with apple, onion and mashed potatoes with meatballs. This was a no-no! It had no taste at all. The meatball was good though. But not going to make this dish again.

Tuesday November 12

Piece of pork, potatoes and carrots.

My food photo’s are crap at the moment because I don’t have daylight when I take the picture. The camera is good though, have to find out what’s the best setting for this.

Are you tired of my walking reports yet? If you are then I have bad news for you, if you’re not it’s good news. The walking calendar for 2014 was online last weekend and I’ve written down all events that looks fun and are close to home. And it ends up I have written down a walk almost every weekend. If there isn’t an organized walk I can do a part of one of the walking trails I have books for. I won’t do them all because the weather can be bad or I might have other obligations but I will do as many as possible which means lots of reports here. Hope you are going to like that LOL.

Running still is one step forward and two steps back. But I’m still not giving up. I know it will get better eventually. I’m going back 2 weeks in the schedule I’m following. Since I don’t have any races planned, I can do that.

One thing that turned out to be a problem is that I switched cleaning my house from Monday/Tuesday night to the weekend because it’s dark early. But that isn’t working because when I have a walk planned and I have to do my cleaning, I skip the run too easily. I want to keep my weekends free for walking and running and go back to cleaning at night on Monday/Tuesday. Cleaning jobs that need light (like washing windows) I still do at the weekend but that doesn’t take too much time. I hope this change and going back a few weeks in the schedule gives my running a new boost.

Weekend plans: tomorrow we have a company “party” of R.’s work. We are going to Rotterdam to do a tour around the harbour (which is the largest in the world). It’s going to be a long day because we have to be there at 8.30 am and it ends around 8 pm. Bella is going to my Mom for the day which is a party for the both of them.

Since my webhostplatform was down for 2 days on Tuesday and Wednesday I didn’t blog during the week which means a lot of food pictures below.

Have a great weekend!

Beebox content week 43:

Broccoli, string beans, pepper, mushrooms, leek, red onion, kohlrabi, carrots, cucumber, bread, appel/strawberry juice, pears, apples.

Another interesting vegetable: kohlrabi. The last time I ate this I was still living at home, my Mom used to make it sometimes. Since then I have never made it myself.

Meals:

Saturday October 19

I used the watercress and portabello mushrooms from the Beebox and made a salad from it with some bacon and an apple-honey dressing. Tasted very good.

Sunday October 20

I used the tomatoes and red pepper from the Beebox. I roasted them with a red onion and garlic for 30 minutes in the oven. Then I removed the onion and garlic, added consommé and put it back in the oven for 30 minutes. I put the onion, garlic, tomatoes from the oven in the kitchen machine. After that I put the soup through a strainer and reheated it with some crème fraîche. Delicious soup!

Dessert was a strawberry-almondcrumble by Nigella.

Monday October 21

Mustard-cheese chicken with endive/mashed potatoes/crème fraîche.

Tuesday October 22

Beef with Caribbean spices, baked potatoes, grilled corn with pestobutter.

Wednesday October 23

An ovendish with sausage, red cabbage, pear, crème fraiche and potato gratin.

Tuesday October 15, 2013: I don’t have to do that (anymore)

Posted on

We have so much rain on Sunday, it started raining Saturday night till Monday morning. There was never a dry moment yesterday and it wasn’t the drizzling kind of rain. No, it was raining hard! There were a lot of troubles in the country because of the heavy rain. I couldn’t even go out for a walk with Bella, it was raining too hard.

Today I got another cook book in the mail:

The new Jamie Oliver. Jamie’s cook books are my favorite by far. This one is all about cooking cheap delicious meals. I took a short look and the meals look very good.

I don’t have to do that (anymore) is a mantra my dear friend Shelley uses and she suggested I use that more often for myself too. I often feel guilty when I skip a run, workout, walk with Bella but why? Because I don’t have to do that. I do it because I enjoy it most of the times and days I don’t feel like it. Well those days happen, no need to feel guilty about it.

I don’t have to run races and I don’t have to run in the rain early in the morning when it’s dark. So when I checked the weather forecast yesterday for today’s run it wasn’t clear if it would be dry. But where I usually stay in bed when it rains and do nothing, today I had two sets of workout clothes ready: 1 for running and 1 for a home workout. I decided yesterday that if it would rain I would put in a DVD and workout in my living room. Because I can do that and I wanted to do that. But when I got up this morning it was dry and I went for that run. But it felt good to make that decision and had created a choice for myself this morning.

I did figure out something though the past days: I need daily exercise. Because till Monday I didn’t workout and didn’t walk with Bella much and my body protested: my lower back started hurting and I got headaches. Both things I had a lot when I didn’t get much exercise a couple of years. Exercising is good for my body, I feel better by doing that. And feeling good is something I definitely want for myself.

Workouts:

Monday: Chalean Extreme

Push Circuit 3, 32 minutes.
Weights workout, chest and leg exercises. Great workout!

Tuesday: Running

I went for a dry run this morning and it was a good one. Felt good when I got home. Pace I had in mind for this run was 6:40

Stats:
Distance: 4.5 K / 2.8 miles
Time: 00:32:11
Running: 2-3-6-6-7 minutes.
Paces: 6:24 – 6:18 – 6:20 – 6:39 – 6:38
Weather: dry, not much wind, 9C (48 degrees)
Last song on Ipod before finish: Robbie Williams – Please don’t die

Meals:

Sunday October 15

Time to try the cavolo nero: I made a package of it with red pepper and radish, some garlic and red onion. I put some butter on top and added white wine and put in in the oven for 25 minutes. In the meantime I grilled a small steak to go with it. It was good, cavolo tastes a bit like kale.

Monday October 14

I made a Greek salad by Nigella, using the lettuce and half of the fennel root from the Beebox. It was the first time I made this salad and it was very good. I cooked the potatoes from the Beebox yesterday and baked them today. We had a thin slice of pork meat with this.

Tuesday October 15

I made a pasta dish from my new cook book. I used carrot, fennel root, blanced celery, onion, garlic tomatoes and the meat from two pork sausages for the sauce. It was delicious.

Monday April 22, 2013: Time to do something

Posted on

We went to the concert last Friday: Boudewijn de Groot. He’s doing his last tour because he’s 68 right now and he don’t want to tour anymore. We hadn’t seen him live before and I have to say: it was very good. We had a great evening, his band was very enthousiastic and so was he. We didn’t know what to expect but it turned out to be great.

It’s time to do something. When I stepped on the scale this morning after not weighing for 2 weeks it scared the you know what out of me. I had gained and am at a weight I haven’t been at since September 2009 (advantage of keeping lists of everything, you can look it up). I knew I gained, I feel it at my clothes, I see it when I look at the mirror. Maybe that’s why I stayed away from the scale longer than usual. The reason is simple: I eat too much, not at my meals but everything between meals.

I decided yesterday that I would take action as of today, no matter what the scale would say this morning. I’m not changing anything in my normal meals but I’m going to watch carefully what I eat between meals. I’m also tracking my calories and want to stick to that for at least 1 week to see how much I eat at the moment. If I don’t do something I’ll be back at my highest weight in no time and I haven’t worked that hard to get it all off for nothing.

Workouts:

Easy Thursday

Easy run of 20 minutes. When I do easy runs I never watch my Garmin, I know 2 songs on my Ipod is about 1 K and I count the numbers and know when I’m about at the end of my run, then I start watching my Garmin. I never look at the pace during these runs, they are about recovering and running at a pace that feels good that day. And this was a good run, no walking breaks.

Stats:

Distance: 3 K / 1.9 miles
Time: 00:20:33

Speed per km: 8.76 km/hour (5.5 miles/hour)

Time per km: 06:51
Weather: dry, windy, 9C (48 degrees)

Last song on Ipod before finish: Europe – The final countdown

Long Sunday

Long run, this is the longest run I’ve done since August last year, pretty pathetic. The weather was perfect for running. I ran 3K without walking (trying to make this a bit longer every run) and took 2 walk breaks the last 3K. It was a bit tough but glad to know I can still do it.

Stats:

Distance: 6 K / 3.7 miles
Time: 00:42:23

Speed per km: 8.49 km/hour (5.3 miles/hour)

Time per km: 07:04
Weather: dry, sunny, not much wind, 3C (37 degrees)

Last song on Ipod before finish: Ilse de Lange – Sister Golden Hair.

Cardio Monday

P90X Cardio X. I have done this DVD before and I really like it because of it’s variety. I started with some yoga, after that Kenpo followed by Plyometrics and finished it with core exercises. Total time: 43 minutes.

Weekly workout review:

Runs: 3. Mileage: 11.5 K (7.1 miles).

Cross training: 1 (Insanity).

Walks with Bella: 5 days (2 hours 20 minutes).

Meals:

Thursday

Mac ham and cheese by Annabel Langbein.

Sunday

A Tana Ramsey recipe: steak with sugar snaps, spring onions and cashew nuts with basmati rice -> delicious!

Dessert: a strawberry crumble -> delicious!

Monday

New recipe from a cooking magazine: codfish marinated in spices and yogurt, brown rice with cashew nuts, spinach. This was a disappointing meal, it was quite tasteless and I’m not going to make this again.

Tuesday November 13, 2012: Low carb?

Posted on

Daily stuff
My other new cook book has arrived too. The new Nigella Lawson, Nigellissima with all Italian recipes her style.

In my last post I talked about my weight and a healthy lifestyle. I have been giving this more thought the past 2 days. Most of the overweight I still have is at my stomach. I feel bloated and tired by the end of the day almost every day. And I shouldn’t forget my IBS problems, some days are good and some are bad. And I remembered that when I was eating low carb last year, I wasn’t feeling that bloated. So I’m thinking about eating lower carb again but this time my way and my style. The reason I stopped the last time because I was following the rules to strict and I couldn’t stick to it. First I’m going to read the lower carb book again because that helped me a lot last year. I can already start by eliminate bread at lunch, think that will help. To be continued.

Workouts

This morning I did a run. Boy, I have to get up earlier to get dressed now that it’s winter. I am wearing my thermo clothes under my running clothes now that it’s colder and I look like a Christmas tree when I step out of the door with my yellow safety vest, my head lamp and the lamp at my arm. But it’s all for safety! The run itself went fine.

Stats:
Running 6 x 3 minutes with 2 minutes walk breaks (30 minutes total)
Weather:dry, not much wind,6C(42 degrees)
Distance: 4 K / 2.5 miles
Time: 00:30:12
Last song on Ipod before finish: The Jacksons & Mick Jagger – State of shock

Outfits

Yesterday I wore the new dress I recently bought. I wore it with my high black boots with a black legging.

Today black pants and a purple top so I could wear my purple boots.

George R.R. Martin
A Song of Fire and Ice – Book 4 AFeast for Crows

Still not finished :)

TV shows I watched last week
Mad Men, Rookie Blue, True Blood, The Walking Dead, Once Upon A Time, The Kennedy’s, Parenthood.

Andrea asked last week what my 3 favorite TV shows are. Well I like all the shows I’m watching and my favourite shows change everytime. But I would say at the moment: Grey’s Anatomy (always in my top 3), Mad Men and Downton Abbey (season 3 is going to start in a couple of weeks here).
