Saturday May 11, 2013: Beautiful day for a walk

Posted on

We are having a 4-day weekend that started on Thursday. Thursday the weather was lovely and I decided, instead of a walk in my village, to take the car and drive to a park at Castle Groeneveld with Bella. I wasn’t the only one with that idea because it was very busy. Lots of people walking with their dogs or lying in the grass to soak up the sun. Bella was having a great time. Lots of dogs jumped in the water but not Bella, she’s not to fond of water, but she came close.

I bought a new outfit yesterday. I have my birthday coming up and we are going for dinner in a fancy restaurant and next month I have a reception of my formal manager who is retiring. I’m part of the organization together with a colleague of mine and I want to look nice then. I bought a powder pink dress and a blazer with lace. The shoes aren’t exactly the right color and I ordered powder pink pumps online that should arrive today.

Workouts:

Easy Wednesday

I grabbed myself together on Wednesday and went for a run before work. I still had trouble leaving and decided to do just a short run to get back at the running and 15 minutes is always better than doing nothing. I was a bit surprised by the humidity, that wasn’t too nice to run in. But other than that it was an okay run.

Stats:
Distance: 2.3 K / 1.4 miles
Time: 00:16:07

Speed per km: 8.56 km/hour (5.3 miles/hour)

Time per km: 07:00
Weather: dry, not much wind, humid, 11C (52 degrees)

Long Friday

I had a 7K planned and it has been 2 weeks since I did the 6K. I was a bit concerned if I could do it and came up with a new strategy the day before. I decided to run 1K and then take a walk break of 1 minute. Mentally I only had to run 1K and then have a break which sounded better to me than 7K. When I got outside it was raining and pretty much wind and I almost decided to go inside again. But I said to myself that there would be more rainy runs in the future and if I could do this run it would be good for my confidence. So I went and luckily it stopped raining after 5 minutes but still there was a lot of wind. Again I had luck on my side because I had the wind in my back for about ¾ of the run. I took my walk breaks after a minute and tried not to run too fast and I did it. I came home feeling great.

Stats:
Distance: 7 K / 4.3 miles
Time: 00:50:44

Speed per km: 8.28 km/hour (5.1 miles/hour)

Time per km: 07:15
Weather: dry, windy, 11C (51 degrees)

Last song on Ipod before finish: Blondie – The tide is high.

And here I thought the cold I had a week and a half ago was all I got, how wrong was I.

It has been so cold last week, normally I can handle it fine but last week I’ve been cold the entire day. Now I know that was because I wasn’t fit. Friday morning I did some cleaning, got my run in, did grocery shopping, took Bella for a walk but when I got home after that I completely collapsed and felt very sick, think I had a fever but since we don’t have a temperature I’m not sure. My head was exploding, my body was tired and all I could do was sit on the couch and do nothing.

I went to bed early and had 10 hours of sleep. When I woke up Saturday morning my throat was still hurting, my nose still running but the headache was gone and I felt better.

By now (Sunday evening) I’m not a 100% fit but it’s getting better every day. I took Saturday and Sunday off from working out. I’m picking up my workouts tomorrow and go to work and we’ll see how it goes. Because I was sick I’m behind on reading blogs but I’ll catch up with you next week.

We had snow last Tuesday and because it’s so cold it doesn’t melt. Today we had some more snow and more expected tonight. It’s cold and it looks like it’s going to stay cold the next week.

Workouts:

Wednesday morning I was glad that I didn’t have a run planned because it was so cold and the roads weren’t clean yet with all the snow. Instead I did a Chalean Extreme workout but I wasn’t really in the mood and I skipped two exercises. Excercises were all for legs and shoulders.
Total time: 29 minutes.

Friday I did training 2 of week of the 5K program. I had to do 2-6-2-6-2-6 and it went fine till the last 6 minutes where I had to take an extra walk break. My physical condition considered it was an okay run.

Stats:
Run-walk ratio: 2-6-2-6-2-6 minutes, 1 minute walking inbetween (24 minutes running, 6 minutes walking)
Weather: dry, windy, 0C (33 degrees)
Distance: 4.4 K / 2.7 miles
Time: 00:31:08
Last song on Ipod before finish: Bruce Springsteen – Cadillac Ranch

Weekly workout review:

My workout week was fine till Friday, then I got sick on Friday and took extra rest days on Saturday and Sunday.

Meals:

Wednesday

Breakfast (4 points): Oatmeal with a half banana, 1 tablespoon brown sugar and 1 tablespoon peanut butter. Never had this combination before and it tasted very good.

Lunch (13 points) Couscous salad, it was delicious, an orange, milk and a bowl of tomato soup because I wanted something warm. Turned out to be way too much for lunch and I wasn’t hungry the rest of the afternoon and didn’t eat my fruits.

Dinner (10 points): Spaghetti with meatballs and tomato sauce.

Snacks: Zoen (during a meeting) (2 Points).

 Thursday and Friday and Saturday

Thursday was a complete off day and I didn’t count points. I had a meeting all day, including lunch and I had too much too eat. Still need to work on that. Friday was okay but I ate not enough during the day because I was sick. Saturday was a good day but I forgot to take pictures.

Sunday

Breakfast (7 Points): Vanilla yogurt with blueberries and granola.

Lunch (7 Points): 2 Slices of whole wheat bread with salad, brie cheese, honey and walnuts.

Dinner (12 Points): Pasta with Bolognese sauce.

Tuesday January 15, 2013: Today I’m hardcore!

Posted on

Remember I told you I am in a work group to improve the vitality of our employees at my work? Well this week we are having a “FIT” week. Every day we have something to do. Yesterday you could test your eyes, blood pressure, measure your fat etcetera. Tomorrow the insurance company is coming to tell some things and Thursday is about mental health. Today was about moving.

The company has a contract with the gym across the street where we can get a membership with a discount. I don’t have it because I don’t live in the same village as where I work and I don’t want to drive there at night or in weekends. The gym came over to the company today and before lunch two instructors went to different floors in the building and we (I accompanied them because I’m in the work group) got people out of their office to do some exercises. Not many were that good a sports to do it but a few did and it was fun. During lunch they gave some demonstrations of parts of group classes.

The photo below is something I noticed yesterday: someone let the water from the statue freeze and this is how it looks now.

The weather turned bad during the day. In the morning we had a little snow but by the time I had to drive home there was more and the roads were very bad to drive. I took it easy and slow and was glad I made it home safe.

Workouts:

Monday morning I did a short The Firm workout: Club Dance. This was fun.
Total time: 20 minutes.

As said above we have snow. The forecast was that it would start here during the night and I put two sets of clothes ready: 1 for running and 1 for a home workout and decided I would see how it would be this morning. It was snowing when I got up but not much and I decided to go out and do my run. Boy I did feel like one hard core bad ass when I was finished: I ran in the dark, in the cold and in the snow.

Right now I’m glad I went because this morning the bike path was pretty good to run at, right now it’s a mess and it’s much colder tomorrow morning. So tomorrow morning I stay inside and do a workout DVD.

Stats:
Run-walk ratio: 7 x 3 minutes, 1 minute walking inbetween (21 minutes running, 7 minutes walking)
Weather: snow, little wind, -3C (26 degrees)
Distance: 3.8 K / 2.4 miles
Time: 00:27:36
Last song on Ipod before finish: Madonna – Like a prayer.

Meals:

Monday

Breakfast (7 points): Two slices of whole wheat bread with a boiled egg.

Lunch (6 points) Three slices of whole wheat bread with filet american and pickles, an orange.

Dinner (8 points): Pork tenderloin, potatoes, chicory with béchamel sauce.

Snacks: ½ Mango, 3 Clementines, 2 cookies (2 Points).

Tuesday

Breakfast (5 points): Two slices of whole wheat bread with strawberry jelly.

Lunch (12 points): Turkish bread caprese (with pesto, tomato, rocket salad and mozzarella). I bought a container of low fat yogurt with some honey and milk at work.

Dinner (8 points): (no picture, forgot it) Chicken breast, baked potatoes and carrots with green peas.

Snacks: ½ Mango, 3 Clementines.

Weight Watchers review:

Two weeks done and I’ve lost more weight than I expected because I normally lose weight slow. I will mention my weight here but only once a month at the beginning of a new month. It still goes very well, I’m not hungry and I eat very tasty meals. Remarks:

  • With the breakfast and lunch that I eat now, I realized how boring these meals have been the past two years or so. I often ate the same. I have a lot more variation now.
  • I need to work on eating fruits at the weekend. Usually I’m not hungry between meals in the weekend and I eat nothing but I also don’t eat fruits at lunch or dinner. Need to work on that.
  • Because I lost weight 2 weeks in a row I gave myself a “reward” and ordered another WW cook book.

Outfits:

Monday: dress in white/black/blue with a blue jacket and blue suede high boots.

Tuesday: blue pants, white top, emerald green jacket, blue suede high boots.

I got some questions from some of you at my last post. I collected them and answer them here:

  • Lori asked if I eat anything between lunch and dinner.
I do, also between breakfast and lunch. Usually fruits that is 0 Points. I can’t make it from
meal to meal on workdays. At the weekend I often skip the snacks because breakfast is later
and I can make it till lunch.
  • Shelley asked about nap time :)
I don’t often take naps.  Sometimes on a Saturday afternoon I take a power nap on the couch
for 30 minutes. That happened more often when I was training for a half and did my long run
    on Saturday.
  • Biz asked me if I don’t eat the flex points because I should because of all my workouts.
So far I haven’t used them much but I thought about your comment and you are making a
point here. I’m going to make sure I use more Points on days where I do “heavy” workouts.
I did some yoga for 30 minutes on Wednesday which is more for my flexibility than that I
break a sweat. I don’t find it necessary to eat more on days like that.
    Thanks for reminding me Biz.

How do you like my new jackets girls? I needed color in my wardrobe so I bought a yellow and green jacket. I can wear them with black or blue in Winter and wear them through Spring and Summer. I’m bringing back my outfits as of next Monday on the blog.

Workouts:

Wednesday morning I did a yogalates workout for the lower body. I like these workouts because they aren’t too long (I get bored easily with yoga) and it has Pilates exercises in it.
Total time 30 minutes.

I got up for my run Thursday morning but I wasn’t feeling well. I had a terrible headache because I’ve catched a cold that started bothering me Wednesday. But with the reminder of Tuesday in the back of my head where I didn’t run and regretted it all day, I did go and see how far I would come.
Well, not very far. It was a terrible run, I had trouble breathing and my head almost exploded. I ended up doing 1 minute intervals and was glad I was back home after 20 minutes. But … during the day I was glad I did try it, no regrets.

Today is a rest day and I’m glad I feel much better already and going to try another run tomorrow.

Meals:

Wednesday

Breakfast (8 points): Oatmeal with milk and 1 tablespoon of raisins and I added some brown sugar.

Lunch (9 points) a pita bread filled with tomato, feta cheese, olive oil and parsil. This was surprisingly tasty.

Dinner (9 points): Pork meat, cooked potatoes, Brussels sprouts.

Snacks: 3 clementines, 1 apple, 2 cookies (2 points)

Thursday

Breakfast (6 points): low fat yogurt, 1 banana and muesli.

Lunch (14 points): I had nothing left in the fridge and was supposed to buy a bread, ham and cheese and some salad at work. But the temptation was too big and I bought some soup, a panini with ham and cheese and milk. This came at 14 points.

But I did learn something and that’s that I better bring my lunch to work so I won’t give in to bad food temptations.

Dinner (10 points): mashed potatoes, carrots and onions with a beef sausage.

Snacks: 1 mueslibar (2 points) 3 clementines, 1 glass of red wine (4 points)

Friday

Breakfast (4 points): 2 slices of bread with hüttenkäse and cucumber.

Lunch (11 points): 3 slices of bread with cheese, cucumber and tomato. I bought a bowl tomato soup and a glass of milk at work.

Dinner (12 points) was a WW recipe. Tagliatelle with ham, leek and mushrooms in a sauce of bouillon and herb soft cheese. Delicious.

Snacks: 3 clementines, not hungry in the afternoon and skipped my apple.

Movies I’ve seen lately

The Intouchables.

Last weekend of 2012 we watched this movie and it is the best movie I’ve seen all year. I highly recommend that you see this movie. I had a smile on my face the entire movie and if I didn’t I was crying. What a fantastic and feel good movie.

The movie is French and is based on a true story: a rich man gets paralyzed by paragliding and needs 24 hour care. A poor young man with a criminal past comes to the job interview but only to get an autograph so he can get his social money. The young men ends up working for the rich men and they develop a friendship that lasts till today. They learn things about each others world and interests. That’s all I’m going to tell you about it, you really should see it for yourself. I promise you: it’s worth it.

Daily stuff:
Thank you for the nice comments about the village where I live. If you ever visitHolland, you’re more than welcome to come and see for yourself.

Shelley asked some questions about the traditional costume women wear in the youtube video I posted. There are only about 270 women in the village that wear this every day. The youngest women in this costume is born in 1950. The costume is special by the use of the “kraplap”. You can see someone in the traditional costume every day in the village but it’s a dying tradition. The younger people don’t wear it except for special occasions. It is expected that you won’t see it every day anymore in 10 years.

Weekend plans: tomorrow night we’re going to a concert by The Golden Earring. The best Dutch rock band that we have but we haven’t seen them play live yet. You may know them because their song Radar Love was a huge hit in theUSAin 1973. When I looked it up I saw that Bill Clinton used the song back in 1992 when he was running for president.

But .. that is if the roads are good to drive. The weather forecast gives very bad weather for tonight and tomorrow morning: lots of snow. Hopefully the roads are clear in the evening.

We are also going to buy a Christmas tree. We have a fake one in the addict but it’s so much work to put it up that we tried a real one last year and we liked that. My company sells Christmas trees and I get a discount on it which makes the tree not too expensive. Do you have a Christmas tree yet?

Workouts:

I have decided to start over with the 5K training because I missed a couple of runs. The program is only 6 weeks and the “long” runs are adding up fast. It seems like it’s easy but it’s not because I’m working on my speed. I want to be faster compared to the running version 1.0 of me. That means that the running parts are fast (at least fast for me). But it went well.

Stats:
Run-walk ratio: 6 x 2 minutes, 1 minute walking inbetween (12 minutes running, 6 minutes walking)
Weather: dry, not much wind,0C(32 degrees)
Distance: 2.5 K / 1.5 miles
Time: 00:17:52
Last song on Ipod before finish: Glee Cast – Stronger.

This morning I did a Firm Express workout: cardio and sculpt.
Total time: 20 minutes.

Dinner:

Wednesday dinner

Turkish pizza: meat with onion, tomatoes, garlic and spices on a wrap heated in the oven with some garlic sauce.

Daily stuff:
Last week I heard that Bruce Springsteen was coming back to Hollandnext Summer for a concert and of course we want to go. Saturday ticket sale started at 10 am and I was ready at 9.55 am. At 10.01 am I had tickets for us. Later that day I read on FB that a lot of people had trouble buying tickets and had to wait for hours to be able to buy them. I considered myself lucky that I got them so fast. The concert is in a park on June 22nd next year.

This might be fun to watch for you: if you ever wonder where I live and how my village looks like, watch the video on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTGLNiXbIdE

Yesterday a real life soap about a few people that live in my village started on Dutch television. I have seen some of the people sometimes but I don’t know them because I don’t participate active in the community. I wasn’t very impressed with the program either but R. likes it. The comment is in Dutch of course but it gives a view shots of where I live. The total video is only 52 seconds so it doesn’t take much of your time to watch it.

Workouts:

That akward moment when you are only a few minutes in your run and you feel like you have to go the bathroom. At first you keep on going and hope it will go away. But a few minutes later you know you have to get home asap if you don’t want to get in bigger trouble. This happened to me last Wednesday at my morning run.
With all my stomach problems, this was the first time I had to stop a run and go home because I had to go to the bathroom and I didn’t like it at all. Hopefully it won’t happen again.

This morning I did a Turbofire workout: HITT 25. I like the HITT workouts, they are intense but short. I had planned to do a 30 minute sculpt session after this but I overslept and didn’t have time to do it.
Total time: 25 minutes.

Outfits:

Today’s outfit

Dinner:

Monday dinner

Endive with mashed potatoes, bacon, onion, herb cheese and walnuts.

Tuesday dinner

A recipe I saw on a cooking show on the Dutch cooking channel: 24 Kitchen. Chicken with garlic, onion, spices, yogurt and herbs out of the oven, baked potatoes and mashed green peas with mint. I loved it, R. wasn’t that enthousiastic.

TV shows I watched last week

True Blood, The Walking Dead, The Kennedy’s, Mad Men, Private Practice, Downton Abbey, Once upon a time, Revenge, Rookie Blue, Game of Thrones.

Season 3 of Downton Abbey finally started here and I love this show. It’s easy going and I love the English aristocrat environment.

Movies I’ve seen last week

The Hangover part II

I liked part 1 better because of the surprise element but still this was a nice movie to watch on a relaxing Friday night.

Sint

A Dutch horror movie. We don’t have Santa Clause, we have Sinterklaas on December 5th. It’s the same principle: giving gifts. This movie was about bad Sinterklaas. This one was murdered in the 14th century and every December 5th when it is full moon his ghost came back to kill as many people as possible. It was scary sometimes and an okay movie, especially for a Dutch movie.

Daily stuff
Pffff work is busy these last weeks of the year, as always at the end of the year. Besides work I have some social work things to go to, starting tomorrow with a reception for someone who is retiring. But I like working in December, everyone is busy but you can feel that everybody is looking forward to the holidays and is in a good mood. I have a vacation from December 24th till January 3rd.

I started eating less carbs last week and I already notice a difference. My IBS problems are less, I don’t feel bloated anymore and I have more energy. I don’t eat carbs at breakfast and lunch but I do at dinner and that works very well for me.
I make sure I get enough sleep (7 hours) at night and I drank less wine last week.
I want to continue this way because I feel so much better.

Workouts

Did a P90X workout this morning: shoulders and arms. I did skip a few exercises because of the time but it was a good workout.
Total time: 43 minutes.

Outfits

Yesterday a black dress with a pink jacket with black/pink pumps.

Today I wore this dress with a black jacket and my black boots.

Dinner

Tuesday dinner

Sausage, potatoes and Brusselssprouts with spring onions, sesame seeds, garlic and soy sauce.

TV shows I watched last week
Mad Men, Rookie Blue, True Blood, The Walking Dead, Parenthood, Game of Thrones, The Big Bang Theory.

Movies I’ve seen last week

MissionImpossible Ghost Protocol

I like Tom Cruise movies, he lives a weird private live but as an actor I think he’s very good. He has made some great movies over the years. And when you watch this movie, you wouldn’t say that’s a guy who’s 50 years old.

Daily stuff:
Yesterday I had a workshop with the secretaries and other ladies in support functions at my work. It was held in a hotel in the next town. I have mixed feelings about it. The subjects would be “Effective influence” and “Quality of the communication at work”. But both subjects weren’t discussed. I also missed the interaction with my colleagues. It was more a one woman show by the lady who gave the workshop. She was talking almost the entire day and mostly about the differences between man and woman. We did laugh a lot however, she had a lot of anecdotes to tell but I think the workshop totally missed what it was supposed to be about. I haven’t learned anything.

In 2 weeks we have another one, this is just the afternoon and only for the 5 management assistants at our company. Subject should be “how close is our team” but I have doubts if we will talk about that after yesterday.

The cook book addict has got herself a new toy: the new Jamie Oliver cookbook “Jamie’s 15 minute meals”. And another one is on the way: the new cook book by Nigella Lawson.

Shelley asked if I could give a tour through my kitchen. Well your wish is my command. Our kitchen isn’t very big but I’m very proud and happy with it. We renovated it, I think, about 10 years ago but I’m still happy with it every day. My favorite things in it are my stove and our espresso machine.

View from outside (Shelley, noticed that Bella is copying Paco’s behaviour by wanting to get in the picture)

View from the living room (R. placed the en suite doors himself):

In the corner we have a kitchen table and on the right is the fridge. The “painting” on the wall is a cross-stitch I made myself.

Outfits:
Yesterday: black pants, black/beige blouse, black jacket and black suede boots.

Workouts:

Yesterday morning I did the hardcore workout. An entire workout focussed on the core. Pretty hard but enough variation in the exercises.
Total time: 53 minutes.

Daily stuff
R. went to the doctor and got antibiotics for his cold. We have decided to stay home this weekend. He isn’t feeling any better despite the medicines and it’s better to stay home and get well.

Sunset Monday afternoon

Today I got an email that my photobook of my jubilee day in September was ready. I went to pick it up immediately. The girl who took the photos that day made a personal photo book for everybody. It looks really nice and is a great reminder of a fantastic day. I asked her if I could get the best photos digital and here they are.

Workouts

Tuesday morning I did The Firm Total Body Time-Crunch, the express workout. It’s a complete weights workout with exercises for the upper and lower body. Great workout.
Total time: 25 minutes.

I got my butt out of my warm bed to do training 2 of my 5K program. I knew I only had to do 20 minutes which made it much easier to get up and go outside. And it wasn’t bad at all. The only thing was that my right calve started to hurt halfway, this happened last Sunday too. I’m starting to think my sneakers are causing this, I have them for over two years and wear them everyday during my walks with Bella. Maybe it’s time to buy some new ones.

Stats:
Running 2-3-2-3-2-3 with 1 minute walk breaks (20 minutes total)
Weather:dry, not much wind,11C(51 degrees)
Distance: 2.9 K / 1.8 miles
Time: 00:20:10
Last song on Ipod before finish: Marco Borsato – Kom maar op

Outfits

From your comments it seemed you like it if the outfits will come back. I’ll post as many as possible from now on but not with me in it. I don’t like it when there are too many photos of me on the blog.

Tuesday I wore a grey dress with a black jacket and grey suede boots.

Today a grey skirt with red and black stripes with a red sweater and high black boots.

Dinner

This is where all the “magic” happens. One of my favourite things in our house.

Tuesday dinner

I made an oven dish of potatoes, chicory, ham and cheese. Very simple and easy to make and very tasteful.

Wednesday dinner

Spaghetti with onion, garlic, bacon and spinach.

Book I’m reading

George R.R. Martin
A Song of Fire and Ice – Book4 AFeast for Crows

Still don’t read much and still haven’t finished this one.

TV shows I watched last week

Mad Men, Rookie Blue, The Walking Dead, Once upon a time, Revenge, The Big Bang Theory, Parenthood, Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy.
