Friday February 21, 2014: Weekend started a day early

Posted on

It’s a vacation week here in Holland and my manager is on vacation. I had pretty catched up on my work yesterday and decided to take a vacation day today. I went to see my Mom this morning. Bella didn’t want to come home with me, she wanted to stay with my Mom whom she adores. It took some serious talking to get her in the car.

Now I’m watching the team pursuit speed skating. We have had the most successful Olympic games ever. We have 22 medals so far which has never happened before and I expect we will at least add 2 more tomorrow in the final for the team pursuit for both the women and the men.

Sunday Bella and I are going for another organized walk, this time we will do 12K (about 7 miles). The walk is tomorrow and Sunday and since the weather forecast for Sunday is better we are going on Sunday.

Hope you all have a nice weekend.

Beebox content week 8:

Eggs, Jerusalem artichokes, apple juice, apples, red beets, flower sprout, mushrooms, parsnip, pears, beef meat, onions, salad, smoked mackerel and celery.

Flower sprout, ever heard of it? (it’s in the top right of the box). I didn’t and looked it up on the internet. It is a new vegetable something between kale and Brussels sprouts, I’m curious if it will taste good.

Wednesday: P90X Plus – Interval Plus
Nice workout with short interval workouts, most exercises were 20 seconds slow, 20 seconds moderate and 20 seconds high speed. No weights necessary. I really like this workout.
Total time: 30 minutes.

Thursday: Turbofire
HITT 15: 15 minutes of high intensity training, I love this workout because it’s only 15 minutes. After this I did the 10 minute Stretch which I love too. I don’t stretch enough, just don’t take the time for it but when I do it feels so good.
Total time: 28 minutes.

365 Days In Nature:

February 14: These deers are back in a meadow in the middle of my town. You are allowed to feed them if you want and they are not shy at all.

February 15: Taken at today’s walk.

February 16: One more of Saturday’s walk.

February 17: Beautiful day, it felt a little like Spring. So glad we have longer daylight already now.

February 18.

February 19: No time today to take a photo, this one is from last Sunday where Bella is playing with a stick.

February 20.

February 21: Beautiful afternoon, lots of seagulls in the air.

Tuesday September 10, 2013: Goodbye Summer

Posted on

Summer is over! We had a couple of hot days last week (32 C / 90 degrees), the warmest September 5 since 1991. Since Saturday temperatures dropped to normal temperatures and we had rain. But I’m okay with that, we had the best Summer in years. July and August were beautiful, it was never too hot but almost every day had sunshine and I have been sitting outside almost every day these months. Nothing to complain about.

But everything has to end and Autumn is one of my favorite seasons (when it’s not raining). I have a couple of long walks planned till the end of this year so hopefully the weather is cooperating. When it’s raining, it’s no use going. Sunday morning it was raining very hard and I couldn’t get Bella outside to pee. She hates the rain, silly dog.

Tomorrow we have our annual work date. I have been organizing this for the past years but this year I was out of inspiration to find something fun to do with a group and I asked a few colleagues if they wanted to organize it. They did and came up with a boat ride and bbq afterwards. Too bad the weather doesn’t look good tomorrow (lots of rain) but hopefully it’s dry when we are on the water.

Running Monday
Start of the new program I am going to follow. I have to be honest that when I got up it was raining and I had a brief thought of going back to bed. But then I said to myself “it’s just rain, the weather will be worse on some days during Winter, just go”. I got dressed, went downstairs, had coffee and stepped outside. And … it was dry. The entire run it was dry and I was glad afterwards I went. The run itself was easy because I did a few steps back. I still want to get faster and have made a kind of pace schedule that I want to try. Today I wanted to do my running intervals no slower than 6:45.

Distance: 4.2 K / 2.6 miles
Time: 00:31:23
Running: 2-3-5-5-5 minutes.
Paces: 6:44 – 6:23 – 6:31 – 6:32 – 6:29
Weather: dry, hardly any wind, 10C (50 degrees)
Last song on Ipod before finish: Guns ‘n Roses – Sweet child o’mine

Strength Tuesday

P90X Chest & Back, 17 minutes.
Second time I did this workout and second time I didn’t finish it. I really don’t like this workout. Half of the exercises are push ups which I don’t like doing. Don’t mind if there are one or two push up exercises in a workout but 12 out of 24: too much. About 6 to 8 exercises are chin ups or pull ups for which exercises I don’t have the equipment and no intention of buying that either. I have so many other workouts I do like that I decided I’m not doing this one ever again.

Friday September 6

Quinoa with wild spinach (from the beebox), carrots, raisins and pine nuts. A recipe I have made before and very tasty.

Saturday September 7

I made a salad using some products from the beebox: salad, cucumber and blueberries. I added chicken, roasted pine nuts and honey-mustard dressing. Tasted great.

Sunday September 8

I had potatoes and pears left from the beebox and I had a piece of pork meat left in the freezer. I decided slow cooking was perfect for Sunday because the meat and pears had to be on the stove for a few hours. I stewed the pears with a little bit of sugar and cinnamon and boy were they good, so tasty. I cooked to potatoes and baked them later, the taste of the potatoes was also so much better than when I buy them in the supermarket. The meat was served with some mushroom sauce (bought that ready-made). A delicious meal.

Monday September 9

Whole-wheat spaghetti with bacon and spinach.

Thursday July 4, 2013: Photo a day challenge

Posted on

Thank you all so much for your support on my running decision. It means a lot to me.
A big shout out and thank you to my blogger friend Shelley. I received a lovely card from her on Monday, just at a moment I needed it. Thank you my dear friend.

Happy Independence Day to my US readers.
I’m asking you for a little prayer or a thought, especially today, for my blogger friend Linzi. I’ve been reading her blog for almost 4 years. I’ve read about the road to her first marathon. The road to and the day of her wedding. Her move from Idaho to Texas as an army wife. Her pregnancy and the deployment of her husband during her pregnancy and the birth of her beautiful baby boy. Therefore I was shocked when I read on FB last month that her husband got attacked in Afghanistan during a mission. He has lost both his legs at this attack and is still fighting for his life today. He was there to secure your and my freedom. And Independence day is all about being independent and free.

It’s weekend and we finally have some good weather on the way. The forecast for the next 2 weeks is sunny and about 25C (77 degrees). A temperature which is perfect for me. Saturday morning Bella and I are doing an organized 10K walk again. You can start from 8.30 am and the plan is to be there at that time so we will be back before it’s too warm.

Photo a day July

My blogger friend Roz has been doing this in June and I enjoyed watching the photo’s she took every day. This month I’m joining her. The challenge gives a subject to photograph every day.

July 1: Happiness
This little diva is pure happiness to me every single day.

July 2: Shoes
One of my favorite things as you know. I shot these two pairs of shoes I recently bought.

July 3: Cold
The only thing I could come up with was the inside of my freezer. This is the little one in the kitchen, we have a bigger one in the garage. In this one we keep bread, frozen fruit and food for Bella.

July 4: Red, white or blue
Happy Independence Day!

Running Monday

I started 7W25K (7 weeks to 5K) on Monday. I had to run 17 minutes and walk 12 minutes. I want to get to a pace of 6:00/6:10 per km so I can run a 5K in about 30 minutes. Because I have so many (long) walk breaks in the beginning, I try to run at the fastest pace I can and on Monday it went perfect.

Distance: 4 K / 2.5 miles
Time: 00:29:07
Running: 3-3-4-4-3 minutes.
Paces: 6:22 – 6:13 – 6:15 – 6:02 – 5:57
Weather: dry, not much wind, 13C (55 degrees)
Last song on Ipod before finish: Passenger – Holes

Strength Tuesday

The Firm Total Body Time-Crunch. Total time: 40 minutes.
Strength exercises alternated with cardio exercises. Good workout.

Running Wednesday

Day 2 of week 1 of 7W25K. Same training as on Monday: 17 minutes of running, 12 minutes of walking. It went as good as on Monday.

Distance: 4.1 K / 2.5 miles
Time: 00:29:43
Running: 3-3-4-4-3 minutes.
Paces: 6:24 – 6:02 – 5:59 – 6:05 – 5:52
Weather: drizzling rain, not much wind, 16C (60 degrees)
Last song on Ipod before finish: Guns ‘n Roses – Sweet child o’mine

Strength Thursday

P90X Plus: Abs/Core. Total time: 21 minutes.
This was actually a very boring workout. Usually I love P90X workouts but not this one. I did finish it because I knew it was only 20 minutes. But I’m not going to do it again.

Monday July 1

This week I’m cooking retro: old recipes from magazines. Except Monday’s meal which was a new one: Asian meatballs, spinach with sesame seeds and rice.

Tuesday July 2

Meatball with cheese and mustard, grilled zucchini.

Wednesday July 3

Jambalaya with chicken and chorizo.

Thursday July

Oven dish of minced meat, red cabbage and mashed potatoes.

Monday April 22, 2013: Time to do something

Posted on

We went to the concert last Friday: Boudewijn de Groot. He’s doing his last tour because he’s 68 right now and he don’t want to tour anymore. We hadn’t seen him live before and I have to say: it was very good. We had a great evening, his band was very enthousiastic and so was he. We didn’t know what to expect but it turned out to be great.

It’s time to do something. When I stepped on the scale this morning after not weighing for 2 weeks it scared the you know what out of me. I had gained and am at a weight I haven’t been at since September 2009 (advantage of keeping lists of everything, you can look it up). I knew I gained, I feel it at my clothes, I see it when I look at the mirror. Maybe that’s why I stayed away from the scale longer than usual. The reason is simple: I eat too much, not at my meals but everything between meals.

I decided yesterday that I would take action as of today, no matter what the scale would say this morning. I’m not changing anything in my normal meals but I’m going to watch carefully what I eat between meals. I’m also tracking my calories and want to stick to that for at least 1 week to see how much I eat at the moment. If I don’t do something I’ll be back at my highest weight in no time and I haven’t worked that hard to get it all off for nothing.

Easy Thursday

Easy run of 20 minutes. When I do easy runs I never watch my Garmin, I know 2 songs on my Ipod is about 1 K and I count the numbers and know when I’m about at the end of my run, then I start watching my Garmin. I never look at the pace during these runs, they are about recovering and running at a pace that feels good that day. And this was a good run, no walking breaks.

Distance: 3 K / 1.9 miles
Time: 00:20:33

Speed per km: 8.76 km/hour (5.5 miles/hour)

Time per km: 06:51
Weather: dry, windy, 9C (48 degrees)

Last song on Ipod before finish: Europe – The final countdown

Long Sunday

Long run, this is the longest run I’ve done since August last year, pretty pathetic. The weather was perfect for running. I ran 3K without walking (trying to make this a bit longer every run) and took 2 walk breaks the last 3K. It was a bit tough but glad to know I can still do it.

Distance: 6 K / 3.7 miles
Time: 00:42:23

Speed per km: 8.49 km/hour (5.3 miles/hour)

Time per km: 07:04
Weather: dry, sunny, not much wind, 3C (37 degrees)

Last song on Ipod before finish: Ilse de Lange – Sister Golden Hair.

Cardio Monday

P90X Cardio X. I have done this DVD before and I really like it because of it’s variety. I started with some yoga, after that Kenpo followed by Plyometrics and finished it with core exercises. Total time: 43 minutes.

Weekly workout review:

Runs: 3. Mileage: 11.5 K (7.1 miles).

Cross training: 1 (Insanity).

Walks with Bella: 5 days (2 hours 20 minutes).

Mac ham and cheese by Annabel Langbein.

A Tana Ramsey recipe: steak with sugar snaps, spring onions and cashew nuts with basmati rice -> delicious!

Dessert: a strawberry crumble -> delicious!

New recipe from a cooking magazine: codfish marinated in spices and yogurt, brown rice with cashew nuts, spinach. This was a disappointing meal, it was quite tasteless and I’m not going to make this again.

Daily stuff
Pffff work is busy these last weeks of the year, as always at the end of the year. Besides work I have some social work things to go to, starting tomorrow with a reception for someone who is retiring. But I like working in December, everyone is busy but you can feel that everybody is looking forward to the holidays and is in a good mood. I have a vacation from December 24th till January 3rd.

I started eating less carbs last week and I already notice a difference. My IBS problems are less, I don’t feel bloated anymore and I have more energy. I don’t eat carbs at breakfast and lunch but I do at dinner and that works very well for me.
I make sure I get enough sleep (7 hours) at night and I drank less wine last week.
I want to continue this way because I feel so much better.

Did a P90X workout this morning: shoulders and arms. I did skip a few exercises because of the time but it was a good workout.
Total time: 43 minutes.

Yesterday a black dress with a pink jacket with black/pink pumps.

Today I wore this dress with a black jacket and my black boots.

Tuesday dinner

Sausage, potatoes and Brusselssprouts with spring onions, sesame seeds, garlic and soy sauce.

TV shows I watched last week
Mad Men, Rookie Blue, True Blood, The Walking Dead, Parenthood, Game of Thrones, The Big Bang Theory.

Movies I’ve seen last week

MissionImpossible Ghost Protocol

I like Tom Cruise movies, he lives a weird private live but as an actor I think he’s very good. He has made some great movies over the years. And when you watch this movie, you wouldn’t say that’s a guy who’s 50 years old.
